The Silver Sage Foundation – Reno Office and the University of Nevada – Reno Rumi Club held their annual Ramadan Iftar Dinner on Saturday evening, April 15, 2023, and approximately 130 people gathered at the McKinley Arts & Culture Center in Reno.

The dinner was an opportunity for the Northern Nevada community members to join their Muslim friends for an evening meal as they break their Ramadan fast. The event included a traditional Middle Eastern Turkish dinner.

The guest list included Assemblywoman Angela D. Taylor, Ph.D., Cynthia Esparza, M. Chief Equity and Community Relationships Officer from the City of Reno, on behalf of Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Ralph Caldwell, and people of diverse faiths and backgrounds attended the annual Ramadan dinner.

The event started with short presentations by community peacemakers about the holy month of Ramadan and its meaning for the community. Before breaking the fast, a call to prayer, “Adhan,” was announced with its meaning in the subtitles on the screen. Assemblywoman Angela D. Taylor, Ph.D., made the closing remarks.

Due to the overwhelmingly positive response, Silver Sage Foundation – Reno Office will continue these interfaith efforts and publicize future events among faith and peoples in the Northern Nevada area.

Fasting is a time to clean the body and mind.

Why do we do it?
What benefits do we receive?

Let’s explore fasting in our religious traditions such as Ramadan and Lent.  Let’s celebrate the many features we have in common.

We held a virtual meeting series and talked about the season of fasting on Sunday, April 16 at 3 pm PT.

Ramadan Fasting

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, reading, charity, prayer, and reflection.  Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and involves abstaining from food, and drink,  from dawn until sunset.  It is a time for Muslims to focus on their spiritual growth, increase their acts of worship, and deepen their connection with Allah.  Ramadan fasting is not only about abstaining from food and drink but also about abstaining from negative thoughts, actions, and speech.

Lent and Easter

Easter is a significant Christian holiday that commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Many Christians around the world observe the season of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday.  Lent is a time of reflection and penance and is often marked by fasting, prayer, and acts of charity.  The purpose of Easter fasting is to purify the body and soul, renew one’s faith, and prepare for the celebration of Christ’s resurrection.  Christians may choose to abstain from certain foods or behaviors during this time to help focus on their spiritual growth and relationship with God.

Both Ramadan and Easter fasting have significant religious and cultural importance and provide an opportunity for individuals to reflect on their faith and personal growth.

Thank you to our Friends at Epiphany Episcopal Church for being together with us at our Annual Iftar Breaking Dinner!

We hosted our friends from Las Vegas Epiphany Episcopal Church for an iftar dinner at the Silver Sage Foundation. It was a beautiful evening with delicious meals and warm conversations.

It was the first iftar event for Silver Sage Foundation’s 2023 Ramadan (1444 H) month. It was great to break our fasts at a gathering that established bridges and based upon interfaith dialogue.

We would like to thank our volunteers for the fantastic meals.

Ramadan Mubarak to you and your loved ones. May the celebrations of this fasting month spread happiness and joys in your life!

We held a virtual meeting on Wednesday, December 22. The topic of the meeting was ‘Holy Night – Remembering the Virgin Mary.’ We had esteemed guests and a colorful program filled different activities and performances.

The meeting continued with Dr. Zeki Saritoprak’s short lecture on Mary’s birth and her childhood. It was remarkable to see how she was able to keep herself strong in a community dominated by patriarchy. Her faith was something to behold.

The meeting continued with a recitation of the Quran. Mr. Serdar recited a verse from the Quran about Virgin Mary and Jesus.

Our long-lasting friend and scholar, Dr. Rosalie Marinelli made some very important remarks on the Virgin Mary. After several remarks from our participants, we ended the meeting. We will continue to have such events and remember the Virgin Mary every year.

We returned to our Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Dinner. The dinner event was hosted at our location on 20th of November. We had dozens of guests from a variety of different backgrounds in Las Vegas. The atmosphere was great, the night was so relaxing, people were friendly, and everyone had a great time. The food that was provided was like a warm hug on cold winter nights.

Our dinner program started with an interfaith prayer. After the opening prayers and remarks by the two honorable men of religion, interfaith and Intercultural Dialogue Radio Show’s host, Imam Mujahid Ramadan, gave a speech on the importance of thanksgiving and interfaith dialogue. His speech was significant as he spoke as the vice president of Interfaith Council of Nevada.

Then we distributed wish cards among our guests, and everyone wrote their new year wishes on them

The event continued with a musical performance by the talented pianist and vocalist, Scott Nicholson. His 30 years of musical experience really mesmerized the crowd as we didn’t realize how quick the 20 minutes passed listening to him.

Closing remarks were made by Dave Sims, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) Summerlin Area Command Captain. He gave a speech on the importance of understanding others as a way of maintaining order in the society. He specifically requested people to keep an open heart and don’t dehumanize the police force as they are also human beings who try to keep civilians safe.

We would like to thank all guests, especially our esteemed speaker guests. Also, a special thanks to Scott Nicholson for his fantastic musical performance. Finally, an important thanks to our catering volunteers who prepared delicious meals for the event.
